Determining the Best Fit Undergraduate Program for Your Teen

How to narrow down your list of schools and take some of the stress out of the college search process

Choosing undergraduate programs to apply to can be a daunting process. There is so much to consider, and pressure to find the "right fit". Below are some things to consider when searching for an undergraduate program that works best for your prospective student and your family.

Environment

Where will your child thrive?

Consider:

  • Location: Is the school accessible? (Consider airline prices, move-in/move-out, travel time. ) Do you prefer cities, suburbs, or rural communities? Is the surrounding area safe? Do you prefer a campus that is spread out throughout the community or centralized?

  • Size: Will your child be more successful/comfortable in a large lecture hall or a smaller classroom setting? How long does it take to get from one side of campus to another? How does the size of the school affect the culture (eg. Many big schools are known for having more program offerings and bigger sporting events.)

  • Mood/Reputation: Are you looking for a fast-paced competitive environment or a laid-back environment? Consider the relationships that schools have with local communities and major employers. What are some of the most cherished traditions on campus?

  • Activities: What types of activities would your child enjoy? Some examples of things to consider are Greek life, intramural programs, community service, sporting events, dances or socials, and academic and social clubs.

  • Housing Options: Which type of housing are you looking for? Do most students live on-campus or in off-campus housing at prospective schools? How close are residence halls/apartments to academic buildings?

  • Facilities: What is the condition of the academic/other facilities? Is technology up-to-date? Does the school have the types of facilities that you are looking for (eg. specific labs)? Is there sufficient parking?

Admissions/Academics

Before your child applies to a school and you pay a hefty application fee, you should consider the likelihood of your child being admitted to said school. Will your child get in, and do most students who are admitted stay.

Before filling out an application for a school, consider:

  • What is the competitiveness of your child's desired major?

  • What is your child's class rank?

  • What is the retention rate of the school? (What percentage of students who are admitted and attend actually graduate from the school?)

  • What percentage of applicants are accepted?

  • Does the school have good support systems/honor IEPs?

  • Is there an honors program?

  • Are advanced placement courses accepted?

  • When can students do internships?

  • Are professors/teaching assistants accessible outside of class time?

  • Is it easy to switch majors or add minors?

Finances/Affordability

  • What percentage of financial need is met?

  • What is the cost of living in the communities in which you are looking at schools?

  • Are there plenty of internship opportunities?

  • Does the institution have a good return on investment?

  • What is the tuition?
